O aluno de inglês bem-sucedido é aquele que:

Always remembers and understands that language is speech above all else and that ears are more useful than eyes in acquiring a foreign language.

Tem plena consciência de que línguas são fundamentalmente fenômenos orais e de que os ouvidos são mais importantes do que os olhos no aprendizado.

Speaks English in class at all times - with the teacher and with fellow students; tries to speak English with the secretaries and other teachers, too, as a way to get even more practice and help to create a rich learning environment.

Fala unicamente inglês na sala de aula - com o instrutor e com os colegas - e tenta falar inglês também com as secretárias e com outros instrutores para praticar e ajudar a enriquecer o ambiente.

Is self-confident. Reaches beyond his capacity, risking mistakes when trying to convey an idea but is receptive to corrections.

Possui autoconfiança e vai além de sua capacidade no esforço de comunicar uma idéia, sem receio de cometer erros, mas sempre atento às correções recebidas do instrutor.

Tries to reproduce pronunciation as close as possible, taking advantage of the teacher's performance model.

Tenta reproduzir a correta pronúncia da língua da melhor forma possível. Esmera-se na arte da imitação.

Tries to infer the meaning of new words rather than translating and flipping the pages of the dictionary.

Procura entender o significado das palavras novas pelo contexto, em vez de traduzir e folhear constantemente o dicionário.

Does not question the irregularities of the language in search of grammar rules. Tries to learn more inductively than deductively.

Tem uma atitude pouco questionadora para com as irregularidades gramaticais do idioma. Tenta aprender mais por intuição do que por dedução.

Is a player rather than a spectator. Participates as fully as possible in classroom activities; helps to build the English atmosphere; analyzes his or her difficulties and errors to understand language differences.

É mais protagonista do que espectador. Participa ativamente das atividades em aula; ajuda a criar um ambiente de inglês; analisa suas dificuldades e seus erros para entender diferenças linguísticas e ajudar o instrutor a entendê-las também.

Asks questions; takes full advantage of the teacher's knowledge of language and culture, and joins all extra activities that the school offers.

Faz muitas perguntas; aproveita ao máximo o conhecimento de inglês e de cultura estrangeira do instrutor; participa ativamente de todas as atividades fora da sala de aula que sua escola venha a oferecer.

Has perseverance rather than expectations.

É perseverante ao invés de ansioso por resultados imediatos.

Communicates his or her needs, suggestions and ideas directly to the teacher; a good teacher is always ready to improvise, helping each student achieve his/her specific language objectives.

Comunica diretamente ao instrutor suas preferências e sugestões de atividades em aula, ajudando-lhe assim a entender mais facilmente os interesses dos alunos e a melhor planejar as aulas, indo ao encontro dos objetivos de cada aluno.

Takes charge of his or her learning and commits time and efforts to it. For example, dedicates time outside class to English (watching English TV or movies, listening to English music, searching the Internet or reading in English, etc.).

Assume o controle de seu aprendizado sem delegá-lo a cursos, professores ou planos didáticos, e investe tempo e esforços no projeto. Dedica, por exemplo, parte de seu tempo livre para atividades suplementares como assistir TV ou filmes em inglês, música, Internet e leitura.
