First Day of Class

Going into a new class on the first day can be exciting and intimidating for new teachers and experienced teachers alike. Depending on your teaching situation there are a lot of variables to take into account and good planning will be your friend.

The first day of a new class is always exhilarating, and if you have nerves, there is no need to worry. With these tips for what every new teacher should know about the first day of class, you can march into your first-day well-prepared and worry free!

   Plan Well and Be Flexible

   Most new teachers tend to over-plan their lessons for the first while. This is not a bad thing. You can never be too prepared for that first lesson. When you are planning, here are some things to think about.
   • The lesson, especially the first one will never go exactly as you imagined it or planned it.Teaching can be unpredictable and that is why it is so much fun.
   • Don’t worry about time on the first day. If an activity takes 20 minutes that you thought would take 40 minutes, give yourself a break and move into your next transition.
   • Don’t try to control too much. The goal of the first class is to get everyone familiar and learning names, to give some explanation of what is to come in the class, and to make your students feel welcome and excited. If you can accomplish those things on your first day, you have done your job!
   • Don’t take things too seriously and let the students settle in as well. Often the students are just as nervous as you are and really just want to get through the first day without any problems. Remember to put them at ease by creating rapport and using humor.

   Talk About Yourself

   You’ll want to have at least one brief activity that allows the students to get to know you a little bit and ask you questions. This should be a relatively small chunk of your lesson plan, as you really want to focus on the students. It will put them at ease to get to know something about you and if you can show them you are willing to put yourself on the spot, they will be more inclined to follow suit. There is one activity that works wonders in this department, and can be pulled out at a moment’s notice if you find yourself with extra time. Think of three to five answers to questions students might ask you. Be sure to add in a tricky one or two. You then write just one word answers on the board. For example: Six, blue, twelve,Thailand. The students then ask you questions about your answers, trying to guess the question. Stay away from things that are too easy like age or country, because then it really isn’t much of a game. There will usually be one or two answers that may stump them and you can all have a good laugh when you reveal your answers. (six--# of my siblings, blue—color of my car, twelve—countries I have visited, Thailand—my favorite country).

   Keep Expectations Reasonable

   As a new teacher, don’t be too surprised or disappointed if the first day of class doesn’t go exactly the way you had planned. It may be less exciting than you thought it would be or maybe you had a great time, but forgot most of your lesson plan. You may need time to get into your rhythm with the class and they are still trying to figure you out. Provide a number of warm-up activities that aren’t too hard to explain or difficult to carry out. That way, if something falls flat, you can just move into the next thing on your agenda. Sometimes you may plan to do four activities, and you only get to do two of them. Give yourself the freedom to stray from your lesson plan on the first day.

   Set the Tone

   One of the most important things that you want to accomplish on the first day is to set the tone of the class. If you are too serious or too wild on the first day, that may put you at a disadvantage later. Plan activities that are moderate, use humor to engage students, and connect with your students. You want to provide structure for the students and also show them that you are the teacher and you do have expectations. Go through a syllabus or course description and address any questions they might have. Be as relaxed as you can, and be yourself. That will surely set the tone of positivity in the classroom.

Teaching for the first time can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be an ordeal.

If you use the above tips and trust your capabilities, you will make it through the first day with many experiences and funny stories to share! You will also have many more first days to approach, so getting into a good routine from the beginning is advisable.

Letters to Juliet

Well, long time since I last post something in here, isn’t it? I just got really inspired to do so, after watching such “cute” and nice movie: Letter to Juliet. Have you watched this movie yet? Oh, I do recommend that you do it. Skeptical or not, you may find new reasons to believe in strong feelings.

Recently I’ve thought a lot about my life and how much I believe that it’s simple. However, I doubt myself every time I have to face an embarrassing or difficult situation. C’mon, I shouldn’t doubt myself. Once I heard that we could do everything we really want. It’s true…isn’t it? Of course it is…

In this movie, a girl who had a nice life, and believed to have everything she need (nice job, nice bf, nice town) found that it wasn’t everything. In a crazy trip to Verona, Italy, she found herself in Juliet’s position, and finally found her true love. As in movies, things seem to make no sense, especially because everything goes well, and bla bla bla…but why can it be so in real life? Why cannot we pursue our dreams and live what we always dreamed? We can…

Maybe because I travel in movies’ stories, I believe that now, 26 years old, I live a life partially just like I always wanted it to be like, with the difference that things happened and came before I expected them to do.

I’ve suffered, I’ve laughed, I’ve loved, I’ve crumbled, but I’ve tried my best not to give up on life and its "surroundings". About true love, well, I know it will happen one day, my way. It won’t be a true love if it isn’t like I want it to be. Oh, and I’m flexible, don’t worry. I will always LOVE. The perfect love is just as simple as life should be. Comprehensive, kind, fearless…brave, courageous, hilarious, anxious…unexpected, easygoing, reliable…ENOUGH!

With this so-called inspired post, I wish I started season 3 of my so loved blog. Enjoy! Live simple…do not forget!

A VIDA É SIMPLES

Prova da simplicidade da vida é o fato de que com mais de 7 bilhões de pessoas no mundo, existem apenas 3 espécies: as capazes, as incapazes e as falsas. As capazes reconhecem seu poder, todos as suas voltas as admiram pelo seu poder. Infelizmente, na maioria das vezes estas pessoas não ocupam cargos importantes em empresas ou organizações. Nem sempre são as mais bonitas, com os corpos mais atraentes.Elas geralmente não tem a malicia e a esperteza provenientes das falsas. Essas, se acham muito capazes, mas não seriam capazes de tomar uma decisão acertada sem o respaldo das que são realmente capazes. Geralmente ocupam boas posições no trabalho, adoram “puxar o tapete” dos colegas e são aficionados por aparecer. São quase sempre belas e atraentes. Para esta espécie o importante mesmo é estar “bem na foto”, mesmo que isso geralmente signifique não se posicionar  nem ter personalidade. São perfeitos auto-promotores. Os incapazes, por sua vez, são na verdade capazes, mas estão satisfeitos com a morosidade da vida que levam e estão sempre observando a relação entre os falsos e os capazes. Não se movimentam muito pois sabem que as outras duas espécies darão conta de fazer a vida seguir seu curso. Geralmente vivem mais, já que gastam menos energia para realizar as coisas. Contudo, esta morosidade não os permite gozar plenamente dos amores e dissabores da vida. Podem ter bons empregos, mas se os perdem, tanto faz. O importante é estar na Terra pra “manter o equilíbrio” e não deixa-la sair do eixo. Podem ser atraentes e bonitas, mas fazem questão de serem desleixados, fazendo com que essas características passem despercebidas. No final das contas, o que importa mesmo é ter caráter e assumir de qual destas espécies você faz parte. Não precisa verbalizar, ou escrever, apenas assumir pra si mesmo, até porque sempre foi assim, e muito provavelmente sempre será.

Ser Professor Para Mim

É interessante pensar que minha mãe, a Sra. Odila que estudou até o 4 ano do fundamental I tenha me ensinado desde sempre a importância que tem um professor. Mais interessante ainda é o fato de Deus ter possibilitado que eu me tornasse um professor. Hoje mais que nunca eu entendo o quanto um professor é poderoso. Primeiro, precisa amar demais a profissão, principalmente em dias como os atuais, com alguns alunos tão descompromissados, irresponsáveis, respondões, sem vontade de fazer nada, e com pais tão ausentes. É nestas horas que o amor pela profissão tem grande peso. Nenhuma outra profissão no mundo se concretiza sem que os indivíduos passem por professores, bons ou ruins. Este ano eu assumi um compromisso em um colégio muito conceituado em Piracicaba. Foi a realização de um sonho, que chegou antes do que eu imaginava que fosse se concretizar. E refletindo agora, me lembro dos primeiros dias, quando eu ainda temeroso, em uma conversa com a aluna Larissa Karoline, ela me disse "- Eu gosto do seu jeito, mas tome cuidado pois outros não gostarão." Eu, objetivamente respondi "- Larissa, eu fui contratado para EDUCAR vocês. Ensinar o que eu sei. Não fui contratado para agradar os alunos e ser o legalzão. Prefiro que muitos não gostem de mim agora mas aprendam comigo e que eu os ajude a ter sucesso no futuro, do que eu tenha sucesso agora por ser um "teacher legalzão" e não acrescente em nada na vida de vocês." Depois, pensando melhor, eu conclui que minha fala poderia até ter sido grosseira, mas sabia que esta aluna era inteligente o suficiente pra entender a mensagem. E é isto que eu sempre idealizei para minha vida enquanto professor. Ser mais, ser EDUCADOR. Enquanto professores somos também pais, psicólogos, enfermeiros, médium, entre outras coisas, então como pode alguém fazer aquela estúpida pergunta "Você é professor e o que mais?" ? Todo professor já ouviu esta pergunta de alguém. Provavelmente alguém que ainda não entendeu esta importância que um professor tem. Os desafios são muitos. As dores, pesadas. A responsabilidade e as contagens até 1000 em 1 segundo, infinitas. No entanto, como diria minha avó Olivia, ser professor é ter um dom magistral. À todos os professores que passaram pela minha vida, aos que estão nela, os bons e os ruins pois com todos eu aprendi e aprendo algo, meu eterno obrigado. À minha maior professora, minha mãe, eu nunca conseguirei agradecer o suficiente por tudo que me ensinou. Sem estudo, sem magistério, e sem lecionar, ela sempre foi meu guia, meu porto seguro, meu ídolo. Eu sei que ela sabe o quanto eu estou feliz onde estou hoje. E quero que ela saiba que tudo isso é também por ela. FELIZ DIA DOS PROFESSORES e que a chama nunca se apague. Sempre existe alguém que realmente quer evoluir. Seja o mediador deste alguém rumo ao sucesso.

Conditionals

Conditional Sentences (also known as Conditional Clauses or If Clauses) are used to express that the action in the main clause (without if) can take place (or not) if a certain condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled. There are three types of Conditional Sentences.

1^st Conditional

→ It is possible and also probable that the condition will be fulfilled.

Form: if + Simple Present, will (not) + infinitive

Example: If I find her address, I’ll send her an invitation.

2^nd Conditional

→ It is possible but less probable that the condition will be fulfilled.

Form: if + Simple Past, would (not) + infinitive

Example: If I found her address, I would send her an invitation.

3^rd Conditional

→ It is about unreal past situations, actions that did not happen.

Form: if + Past Perfect, would + have + Past Participle

Example: If I had found her address, I would have sent her an invitation.

Why "The Big Apple"?

Hey, long time no see you! Well, hope you´re doing fine. Last July I had the pleasure to be in New York for the second time. Oh, sweet New York. The first time, in 2009, I wasn´t so lucky as this time. I stayed only 3 rainy days in early May. This year I chose the month of July to enjoy such a wonderful city, and it was awesome. I have to thank my friends Adriana and Wellington for the hospitality. Besides, Juliana was a wonderful company. I couldn´t forget Luciano, who patiently stood me.

After I arrived someone asked me why NY was called “The Big Apple”. I couldn´t answer it, but I decided to go for it.

Searching for its origin I understood that there are many possible and debatable reasons, but one that seems more reasonable.

The history says it was the jazz musicians of the 1930s and ‘40s who put the phrase into more or less general circulation. If a jazzman told you he had a gig in the “Big Apple,” you knew he had an engagement to play in the most coveted venue of all, Manhattan, where the audience was the biggest, hippest, and most appreciative in the country.

The term had grown and was in fact generally forgotten by the 1970s. Then Charles Gillett, head of the New York Convention & Visitors Bureau, got the idea of reviving it. The agency was desperately trying to attract tourists to the town Mayor John Lindsay had dubbed “Fun City,” but which had become better-known for its blackouts, strikes, street crime and occasional riots. What could be a more wholesome symbol of renewal than a plump red apple?

The city's industrial-strength “I ♥ NY” campaign was launched toward the end of the Lindsay administration in 1971, complete with a cheerful Big Apple logo in innumerable forms (lapel pins, buttons, bumper stickers, refrigerator magnets, shopping bags, ashtrays, ties, tie tacks, “Big Apple” T-shirts, etc.).

Por que estudar inglês?

Há algum tempo, enquanto teclava no MSN com minha amiga Lúcia Maciel de Pelotas, também educadora e professora de língua inglesa, discutíamos a importância de se estudar inglês hoje. Então, resolvi escrever este post, mesmo depois de tanto tempo.

Refletindo sobre esta questão desde então, cheguei a uma conclusão um tanto quanto óbvia: assim como ter uma noção básica do mundo digital, aprender inglês hoje é fazer parte do mundo. Muitos são os países que tem inglês como língua materna. Os outros (ou grande maioria) também falam a língua. O inglês é sem dúvidas a língua de conexão entre os povos. Se em breve o mandarim, espanhol, ou qualquer outra língua ocupará este espaço, somente o futuro dirá. Enquanto isto quem dita regras e estabelece padrões é o inglês. Ah, não adianta querer ser “rebeldezinho” e achar que não precisa fazer parte do mundo globalizado.

Minha história com o aprendizado desta língua é bizarro, considerando minha atual profissão. Comecei aos 12 anos quando comecei a me dar mal no colégio na disciplina de inglês. Sabe por quê? “Meu professor era muito chato, e não sabia nada.” (como se eu soubesse o que era “nada”). Era assim que eu pensava. Hoje que sou um professor de inglês formado e tenho paixão pela profissão, tenho certeza de que eu não estava tão errado. Enfim, bem ou mal ele me colocou no caminho que me levaria até onde estou, com muita alegria. Também durante este tempo eu me lembro do deboche que eu fazia, cantando com minha irmã enrolando a língua e achando que estava falando inglês. Era um barato. Hoje, ridiculamente engraçado.

Mas por que será, ou como será que eu sou útil como professor de inglês? Como eu posso ajudar pessoas a conquistarem seus espaços no mundo competitivo? Vamos refletir sobre algumas situações.

Aprender inglês não é mais status, é necessidade. Já faz parte de um currículo básico que as empresas exigem. Você vai “usar” inglês na empresa na qual está concorrendo a uma vaga? Talvez não. Mas talvez sim. Pelo sim ou pelo não, será contratado aquele que, além de ter estudado, deverá saber colocar esta língua em uso de forma eficaz, produtiva. Pesquisas realizadas por organizações da área de recursos humanos confirmam: dominar este idioma pode lhe garantir um salário até 60% maior e, claro, maiores chances de ganhar uma promoção. Basta olhar os jornais e verificar quantos anúncios de empregos incluem, em suas exigências, o domínio de, pelo menos, um idioma: o Inglês. Isso sem falar nas necessidades acadêmicas (vestibular, pós-graduação, MBA etc).

Mas será que eu preciso de inglês somente pra conseguir um trabalho bom ou uma posição melhor na minha empresa? Não! Existem várias outras especificidades, ocasiões, necessidades.

Como falante da língua há muito tempo, eu posso lhe garantir que não existe prazer maior que poder assistir um filme (de Hollywood) sem precisar colocar legendas em português ou nenhuma legenda e ser capaz de entender, inferir, interagir.

Imagine você viajando com seus pais ou dirigindo seu carro. Toca aquela música que você sempre ouve e gosta demais. Porque não cantar junto? Ah, sim, é preciso saber inglês.

Poxa, meu amigo tem um jogo de tabuleiro, outro no PC e outro jogo do Wii. Fenomenais, mas eu não consigo jogar. É tudo em inglês. Pois é, mais uma coisa extremamente prazerosa que eu poderei me deleitar se eu compreender inglês.

Meus tios receberam dois intercambistas. Ele mora lá na Nova Zelândia e ela na África do Sul, países com culturas bastante diferentes da minha. Queria tanto poder conversar com eles, saber mais, aumentar ainda mais meu conhecimento de mundo. Olha só, mais uma coisa que acontecerá se eu souber inglês.

Eu estava assistindo um jogo de vôlei entre Brasil e Estados Unidos e entendi mais ou menos o que o jogador americano disse por que eu consegui ler o lábio dele. Ele falava em inglês. Que demais!

E agora que eu já estou na faculdade e tenho que escrever meu TCC (Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso), e a maioria da bibliografia está toda em inglês? Pois é, você pode até usar o Google tradutor, mas certamente perderá muita coisa neste processo de tradução. No mundo rápido em que vivemos, toda informação lançada é livremente utilizada e reutilizada. Se você não for capaz de compreender esta informação na íntegra, o seu trabalho será apenas mais um trabalho ordinário.

Engraçado como em um espaço tão curto de tempo consegui elencar várias situações corriqueiras que pedem o conhecimento concreto da língua inglesa. Existem muitas outras. Este é o idioma da Internet, das relações comerciais entre países, da troca de informações importantes para o desenvolvimento de negócios e de pessoas. É também um caminho para conhecermos pessoas de outras culturas e com elas trocarmos experiências, virtuais ou reais.

Que o Inglês se tornou uma necessidade básica em nossa vida não é mais novidade para ninguém. Quem não está ligado, está por fora! Esta língua veio pra integrar pessoas que querem fazer parte do mundo, pra quem não tem medo de desbravar barreiras e se comunicar com o mundo. Pra quem quer viver experiências novas, sempre, de forma eficaz, moderna, rápida, e até mesmo solidária. Não existe um ser que seja capaz de raciocinar que seja incapaz de aprender uma língua. Existem dificuldades, mas não incapacidade. Também não existe idade pra se aprender algo novo, nem uma língua. Só é necessário força de vontade, garra, e empenho, muito empenho. É uma inverdade esta história de aprender uma língua e falar “fluentemente” em 18 meses, a menos que você passe estes 18 meses falando inglês 24 horas. Sim, sem dormir. Ainda assim lhe faltará muita coisa a ser ensinada e aprendida. Eu estudo desde os 12, tenho 25, e ainda tenho muito que aprender. Mas sim, eu acho esta língua muito fácil de aprender, principalmente se a compararmos com Português, Espanhol, Francês, Mandarim, Alemão...
